Winter is winding down in some parts of the country but is still in full swing in others. It’s during this time that people often tend to fall sick, usually due to the flu. Having a cold or a flu can have a big impact on your day to day activities and at best, just be so annoying. No one likes that annoying cough with a drippy nose. So here we go, here are a few ways that you can avoid falling sick this (and every other) season. Here are some tips on Staying Healthy in Cold and Flu Season.

Keep a Healthy Digestive System

Wait…what? Why does the health of my digestive system matter? Well, as I have said time and time again, a healthy digestive system, is directly responsible for a healthy immune system, it is one of your body’s first lines of defense. If your digestive system isn’t functioning properly, it will be unable to properly digest nutrients and provide the healthy bacteria needed to fight off the bad ones.

Probiotics, while a healthy supplement year round, become even more important this time of the year. They greatly improve the health of your digestive system and provide the necessary bacteria that you need to digest food and keep you healthy. A healthy balance between good and bad bacteria is extremely crucial to a healthy immune system. Probiotics can also be found in fermented foods such as: kimchi, sauerkraut, yoghurt, etc.

Supplement with Vitamin D

The sun is gone in hiding and unless you live in certain, sunny, areas, you will barely get in enough sunshine to provide you with the optimal levels of vitamin D. It is a good idea to supplement with this sunshine vitamin, especially during the cooler months, as many studies have found that, Vitamin D, can cut the risk of the influenza virus by almost half. Aim for at least 2,000IUs daily and try to get it in the Cholecalciferolform as this is the most natural and easily absorbed form of the vitamin. If you are deficient in this vitamin then aim for at least 8,000IUs. Consult with your doctor to be sure.

Eat Garlic

Garlic can be considered a superfood when it comes to fighting the flu. It is a very powerful anti-bacterial and is also known to have anti-vital effects. The best way to take in garlic for its flu-fighting effects is to just chew on a raw garlic every few hours. I know this is disgusting, so, just put a few chopped cloves in to your soup and you will have a powerful health-boosting combo.

Maintain Good Hygiene

I feel like I shouldn’t even have to mention this but I will, just in case. Bacteria and viruses thrive in a dirty environment. It provides them plenty of food and therefore, it is important that you maintain good hygiene. Wash your hands with soap regularly, specially before touching food!

We hope that these tips on Staying Healthy in Cold and Flu Season help you in the future!
